Evaluations

Here I am, a twenty-something year old. I’m at the age that I assumed I would have found stability at. The age where I would know what I want to do, where I want to be. I would have an independent life and a puppy, living in a studio apartment overlooking an ancient city. Maybe Rome, or Rio De Janeiro. The possibilities would be endless. Yet, as I type this, I realise how stupid I was at fifteen. Because I don’t know what exactly is my life now. I’m not entirely sure if I want to follow the path that […]

Misconceptions

For a few days, expect a lot of pondering to happen in this space. If that’s not your cup of tea, well, see my Instagram instead. It’s pretty. When I told my parents I wanted to go see Africa, they were in doubt. And I get it, why wouldn’t they be? After all, most of us have been exposed to a very crude picture of Africa. The picture of malnourishment and malaria, the picture of blood diamonds and civil wars. And while this is true, it’s not what defines the entire continent. To put it in context, what if I used […]

Christine

Most my week was spent with Christine, and it worked. We got her into a special school, and she’s going to be funded by the school itself. We got it done. The actual process itself was tedious. Government hospitals in Zambia are a lot like those back home – least amount of facilities, lazy staff, crazy levels of bureaucracy. This particular Doctor named Gongo absolutely refused to work, no matter how much I tried to explain to him the desperate situation we were in. The psychiatric department had no facilities, the doctors there had no electricity in their cabins. There […]

Europe is lost

Europe is lost, America lost, London is lost, Still we are clamouring victory. All that is meaningless rules, And we have learned nothing from history. People are dead in their lifetimes, Dazed in the shine of the streets. But look how the traffic keeps moving. The system’s too slick to stop working. Business is good. And there’s bands every night in the pubs, And there’s two for one drinks in the clubs. We scrubbed up well We washed off the work and the stress Now all we want’s some excess Better yet; A night to remember that we’ll soon forget. […]

Monsters

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Wonder

As children, we were afraid of the monsters that lurked inside our closets and under our beds. We peeped into them to check for evil eyes staring back, and sometimes pulled covers over ourselves as shield. When the morning broke, the monsters were gone. There was nothing to fear anymore, nobody waiting to strike. As we grew older, we stopped looking under our beds and into the closets. Monsters don’t exist, we told ourselves as we went to sleep with the windows open and covers partially wrapped around our bodies. That was the period with no fear, perhaps the one […]
